The Institute of Mental Health (IMH) is an innovative research and education partnership between Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Nottingham that serves to bring together the healthcare and academic sectors to achieve ‘Research and Education Excellence for Innovation’.

Our new Head of Communications will work across academic and NHS boundaries to support our corporate research and education objectives, working directly with Trust and University communication teams.
We’ll look to you to guide and advise colleagues from a variety of disciplines and at all levels on the communications and marketing of their research and educational activities; enhancing reputation and supporting income generation.
We are looking for an experienced communications professional, with a knowledge and understanding of communications channels and their relative strengths and weaknesses, who can develop and lead an overall communications strategy for the IMH with clear objectives, evaluation measures and risks.
You will develop and manage positive relations and act as the communications link between IMH and key stakeholders including national and regional commissioners, policy makers and partner organisations. You will also work with IMH Board members and other senior staff to build the IMH’s profile, internally and externally.
You will provide communications, marketing, media and social media advice to the Institute’s Board, Leadership Team and senior academics and educational consultants.
We need someone who will plan and deliver communications and marketing projects/activities/events on time, to high quality standards and in a cost effective manner.
The role demands an understanding of the environment in which the IMH is operating within the wider NHS/healthcare and higher education/research sectors, and an awareness of the impact of national changes on service delivery.
Offering plenty of variety, this role is both strategic and operational, managing a small team to enhance the impact and reputation of the IMH and its respective partners.
You will be educated to masters’ level or equivalent in a relevant discipline and will have significant experience of devising and delivering effective communications strategies, to include internal communication, media handling, digital communications (web and new media/social media), stakeholder and broader public relations and issues management, including lobbying and influencing policy.
We are looking for someone with sophisticated writing skills, translating scientific research into user friendly articles and other forms of communication for patients, clinicians, policy makers and the wider public.
You will also have experience of managing delegated budgets and achieving annual income targets.
We are seeking someone who is commercially aware and able to manage value for money contracts.
The role requires an individual with a high level of integrity, as well as sophisticated influencing and persuading skills, the ability to problem solve and use their initiative to prioritise and manage constantly changing demands.
In this role you will be a key ambassador for the IMH and will have the expertise to act decisively and with confidence when dealing with media, press and external organisations.
