3 things I learned this week – volume 17

March 26, 2020 Darren Caveney

Well the week was ended on a relatively high, after I managed to procure some loo roll after five consecutive unsuccessful attempts. But then Rishi Sunak went and took away that high in pretty swift order today…

by Darren Caveney

It’s been another tough week for communicators across all sectors. If you work in-house you’ve probably never been busier. If you’re self-employed, a freelancer or a consultant you’re probably quieter than you’ve been in quite a while.

Here are some reflections on my week.

1. Communications Consultants Virtual Support Group

We had our first video coffee chats on Monday – yes via Zoom – and it was great to see some familiar faces as well as meet some new ones. We chewed the comms fat on our current predicaments and made some plans for outputs and outcomes we could deliver.

My learning

It’s always good to talk and learn from others in similar roles and situations. We’ve set up weekly calls to support one another over the coming months. If you’re a consultant or freelancer and would like to join please let me know.

2. This crisis gives us a chance to learn new skills

Well with the UK in lockdown I thought I would teach myself some new skills this week. I’ve always fancied having a go at making my own bread so I dug out some recipes. But have your tried buying bread flour and yeast extract recently? ☹

So, instead, I’ve have been re-watching some classic films this last week. Basic Instinct, Lost in Translation and Training Day to name three.

My learning?

I was worried that Lost In Translation would feel creepy and inappropriate 17 years on. But do you know what, it’s still a beautiful movie. It’s on Netflix if you have it - give it a watch for two hours of escapism.

3. Doofus of the week

Well I’d like to say Rishi Sunak who seems to have not stepped in to help many of us comms consultants – one man and woman bands running our own Ltd companies don’t qualify for any of the support announced on Thursday night. Nothing, really? Cheers.

Tim Martin could claim this title every week. In fact, a bit like when Brazil won the men’s World Cup for the third time they got to keep the trophy, he could have the same.

But this week I’m giving it to Sport Direct ‘supremo’, Mike Ashley. Already loathed in Newcastle. He managed to spread that feeling UK-wide on Tuesday. You really did that?

My learning?

As consumers, we will all remember the brands, organisations and individuals who did the right thing during this crisis, and those who did not.
