strategy surgery: making your strategies stick

July 30, 2026 Darren Caveney

Writing a comms strategy is the easy bit. Making it stick, fly, deliver and delight is the hard bit.

by Georgia Turner and Darren Caveney

The infamous comms strategy. You almost certainly already know what a comms strategy looks like and what it should contain. In fact you could create one in AI in under five minutes now with the right prompts. But developing and delivering a strategy which sticks, which survives contact with your organisation, your culture, your internal services, and the never-ending side-wash of demand which flows into your team is a different beast. And Google and AI will not have the real-life comms experience and practical know how to get around those challenges.

That’s where this brand-new workshop comes in: Strategy Surgery with Georgia Turner and Darren Caveney.

What we offer is:

  • 60-years of combined senior comms experience

  • Delivery of countless strategies, plans and campaigns

  • A wealth of knowledge gained from working with comms teams all across the UK

  • Insights gained from multiple comms reviews and audits

  • Understanding of how UnAward-winning and successful teams thrive

We’re excited to launch this new workshop to help you out of the many holes comms teams have to navigate in the journey to delivering strategies which work in the real world.

This isn't a theory session but getting under the skin of what makes or breaks a comms strategy.

Who is this workshop aimed at?

Anyone responsible for developing and delivering a comms strategy, a project comms plan, or a meaty campaign.

You may already have a comms strategy in place but does it need refreshing? Is it working for you? Does it need to be rewritten because you’re in a council with a new administration? You’re in the NHS surrounded by change? You work in blue light services or housing and the new prime minister and his government are likely to bring in changes which mean you need to adapt and flex your comms strategy and supporting campaigns.

This workshop is open to anyone in the public sector.

And we’ve kept the price as accessible to you as we can for a full day in person session with lunch provided.

What will the workshop include? 10 reasons to be there…

1. A strategy self-audit: Where are you at? What needs refreshing? What are your gaps? What steps do you need to take?

2. Structuring your strategy: Choosing a template and framework which suits you. What are the options, which one will you use? And what should your strategy contain? We’ll go through all the bases and share useful insights.

3. Success factors: What can get in the way of your strategy, plan or campaign really delivering? How can we over come them – learning lessons from others.

4. Getting into the detail: Your processes, your platforms, your channels and your resources.

5. From strategies to stories: The importance of narrative, developing effective messaging, and creating content which delivers.

6. Learning from the best: How do others do it? Best practice examples, case studies and a guest appearance or two to hear from the horse’s mouth on how to make strategies stick.

7. Knowing when it’s worked: What does good evaluation look like and how can you deliver it?

8. Commsing comms: Creative solutions to promote the work of your strategy and campaigns.

9. Strategy surgery: Bring along your own tailored questions and challenges for the strategy, plan or campaign you need to develop and we’ll answer your questions and look for solutions from the room too.

10. A room full of supportive colleagues: Join a new network to share in this learning environment and day with you.
