Well the days all feel the same right now. But they still throw up some pretty important learning…
by Darren Caveney
Here are some reflections on my lock-downed week.
1. How did THAT happen?
We know that there is always someone worse off than ourselves and it’s important to be grateful for things, now more than ever.
But when I found out that Victoria Beckham was eligible for Government business support (and I and 710k other directors and sole owners of Limited companies are eligible for zilch) I will admit to being peeved. Yes, I swore.
When the Chancellor stood up and said that 95% of businesses would be protected during COVID-19 I believed him, he seems like a nice enough chap. This wasn’t quite what I had in mind.
My learning?
The devil is indeed always in the detail.
2. Lockdown Laudations
Now instead of taking to social media to bemoan what we could call #BeckhamGate I decided to use this rare slab of free time to do something positive.
I was actually inspired by Paul Masterman who said something nice about me on Twitter and I decided to pay forward that positivity with what I am calling ‘Lockdown Laudations’. It’s simple - I record a rough two minute video to recognise the talent, skills and achievements of brilliant comms people I’ve met but who often fly under the radar.
If you missed them here are episodes one, two and three.
I’ll be doing more of these next week - if you want to follow them the hashtag is #LockdownLaudations, unsurprisingly.
My learning
Recognising others is a really productive thing to do in these troubled times. The wider feedback and love it’s creating for these comms pros is a lovely thing to see. Make love not war, as the saying goes.
3. Cooking up a storm
I’ve always loved cookery. I like creating things anyway but it’s even better when you get to scoff them too.
So with my new local fruit and veg start-up delivering amazing ingredients now each lockdown week I’m taking the time to cook up some recipes I’ve never tried before. Think spring bubble and squeak, bang bang cauliflower and summer veg frittata. Fancy, huh.
The kids are wondering what the hell is going on.
My learning?
An old dog can be taught new tricks.
Stay safe x
