what would dolly do?

September 4, 2026 Darren Caveney

The outpouring of love and affection for Dolly Parton from everyone from Beyonce to our own Prime Minister Andy Burnham has been extraordinary.

I have been a Dolly fan for 25 years, since I moved into a tiny bedsit and my neighbour in the much bigger flat next door used to blast out Jolene on a regular basis through our shared wall. I never had the courage to complain and gradually found myself becoming intrigued by the story of the song and loving it too.

So I’m so pleased to write a blog which talks about comms and Dolly!

November 9, 2022 Darren Caveney

Nearly seven years ago, I wrote about how to deal with negative or inappropriate comments on social media for this site. I now realise I knew nothing about negativity on social media.

tv, film and cinema recs and reviews for comms people: september

October 5, 2022 Darren Caveney

Inspired by the genius comic, Stewart Lee, I’ve decided to keep a record of all of my TV, film and cinema viewing throughout 2022. Plus, I will write a micro review for each one and list where I watched it.

If you’re like me you’re always on the hunt for a quality watch in and amongst some very average fayre.

So, these recs and ratings might be useful to you.

Here goes for September.

stories from our covid response – a different approach to annual report writing

February 3, 2022 Darren Caveney

How to explain to your residents the level of local support provided by their council during the COVID Pandemic? The hard word, the commitment, the dedication, the late nights, the early mornings, the weekends. That the council you may only need to empty your bin or to grant planning permission on your home extension, stepped up and delivered for the community at a time of national crisis.
