About the role
We are seeking a motivated and experienced individual to lead and deliver our Communication, Cultural and Marketing function. This is an exciting, influential role where you’ll implement marketing strategies that promote East Devon in line with our council plan and our cultural strategy, enhancing our brand, engaging our community and promoting our values.

Day-to-day, you’ll manage the delivery of internal and external communications and ensure all collateral is consistent with our employer brand. This could include cultural content, events, marketing and engagement activities, as well as staff newsletters and our intranet. With responsibility for the marketing and events budget, you’ll also identify ways to generate revenue and maximise income opportunities across the Council. This is a hands-on role with plenty of visibility; you might be representing the council at meetings and events, co-ordinating internal communications, or finding and sharing opportunities for service improvement. You’ll provide strategic advice and direction that raises the profile of East Devon to both residents and visitors, making it a destination of choice.

You’ll head the Communications, Arts and Culture, Events and Marketing team and encourage a learning culture through training and development opportunities or simply the sharing of your own expertise. Whether you’re providing progress reports to stakeholders or assisting councillors and senior leadership teams with PR advice, you’ll be the go-to for reliable and accessible guidance on all things marketing and communications.

Please note, this post is politically restricted under the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act 2009.

About you
You will have a degree level qualification (or equivalent, demonstrable vocational experience) in communications and media. This will be supported by business or management qualifications at Level 5, or equivalent experience, as well as a background leading a marketing sales team and generating income from a portfolio of assets.

You’ll be confident in your knowledge of the policy, legislative and operational issues relevant to this role, from local government to print, social and broadcast media. Collaborative, proactive and highly organised, you’ll handle competing priorities and work with stakeholders, colleagues and partners to deliver results on time and within budget. You’ll provide clear direction and influence stakeholder groups with sound analysis and professional credibility. Leading by example, you’ll implement defined structures and empower those around you to deliver projects we can be proud of.

An interest in Arts & Culture would be beneficial as you will be a strong advocate for East Devon's Culture Strategy 2022 -31; driving forward the strategy's ambitions and values, and raising awareness of our cultural strengths in building flourishing communities which improve the quality of life and health of our residents. You will play a critical role in integrating the Cultural Strategy Objectives and Actions internally into wider Council plans, as well as the external promotion and marketing of East Devon’s cultural offer of events, exhibitions, theatrical shows and festivals, which play a significant role in shaping the visitor economy.
