media interview case study: beth dishes out ritual humiliation

May 19, 2023 Darren Caveney

In stockinged feet, somehow managing to look awkwardly relaxed as heavy rain poured outside, Rishi Sunak began as comfortably as he could, given who was sitting opposite him. Beth Rigby, Sky News’ political editor, has the look of an experienced deputy head teacher at an urban comprehensive who is not so much angry as, well, just disappointed in you.

3 principles of effective public engagement

May 15, 2023 Darren Caveney

In today’s society, the public expects convenient, digital and responsive services, but engagement can be costly and time-consuming. Public sector organisations are struggling to share information and gather feedback from their entire communities, often relying on expensive data collection, town hall meetings and awareness campaigns. Because of a lack of effective engagement channels, people are ready for a more digital government that provides a more streamlined experience.

communicating change and the conundrum of a comms strategy

May 11, 2023 Darren Caveney

I’ve always had a bit of a problem with the word ‘strategy’.  It’s overused (everyone wants a strategy for something right?) and can be intimidating (strategy must be a big, important, complicated thing surely?).

standard bearers – fire sector lays down the marker for good comms

April 25, 2023 Darren Caveney

If there’s one thing that comes up time and time again in conversations with communicators, particularly in the public sector, it’s the common theme of people outside of the profession do not entirely understand what we do. Particularly the amount of hard work, skill and professionalism that goes into it.

the pain of professional ghosting

April 3, 2023 Darren Caveney

Have you ever been ghosted? I’ve heard from friends navigating the dating scene that it’s sadly an all-too-common occurrence. You meet, you feel a strong connection, you’re talking every day on WhatsApp discussing plans for a brilliant future together and then one day – Nothing. Nada. Zilch

I don’t know about you, but for many years, to a seasoned old comms pro like me, data was the domain of the techies. IT stuff. It was numbers. It was spreadsheets. It was dull! Us comms folk, we’re creative you know. We work with words, and images and stories.

3 reasons why local authorities should focus on reputation, now more than ever

March 13, 2023 Darren Caveney

‘Multi billion pound black hole’, ‘councils on the brink of bankruptcy’ and ‘sleepwalking into financial disaster’ - recent media headlines paint a seriously bleak picture of the UK’s economy. The downturn coupled with soaring inflation and continued budget cuts has left local authorities in a difficult situation.

spin off - don't call us spin doctors

February 27, 2023 Darren Caveney

A political party in Scotland recently announced that if they won power they would merge health boards to save money. Of course, it’s the job of politicians to look for ways to make the public pound go further. There’s plenty to debate about what the optimum size for health boards might be, but that’s not what this blog is about. I was moved to put finger to keyboard by the use of one phrase: ‘spin doctors’.
